Gender-based violence takes many forms, including physical and sexual assault, coercive control, economic abuse, tech-facilitated violence, and harassment. It can occur in your home, your workplace, online or anywhere else. If you or someone you know is experiencing gender-based violence, or is otherwise in crisis, help is available. Below is a list of crisis services that provide support. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Bystander Intervention 101

You don’t have to be a hero or make a big scene to make a difference in someone’s life. You can take steps to protect someone who may be at risk in a way that fits your comfort level. Bystander Intervention 101 is a skill building resource provided by the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE) that offers information and instruction on active bystander intervention, as well as a wide range of resources about sexual assault ad consent in Canada.

Kids Help Phone

Kids Help Phone is Canada’s only 24/7 e-mental health service offering free, confidential support to young people in English and French. Kids Help Phone offers crisis support and professional counselling as well as a wide range of resources of issues including; healthy relationships, bullying, substance use safer sex, climate change, 2SLGTBQ+, grief, supporting others, suicide, and much more.

Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin – I am a Kind Man 

Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin – I am a Kind Man is guided by an Indigenous approach to healing that recognizes the distinct histories, unique cultures, and shared traumas of all Indigenous people negatively impacted by colonization. It supports Indigenous men to come together to end violence. It is designed to offer Indigenous men a safe place to understand their roles and responsibilities in ending violence.

Love is Respect

Love is Respect strives to engage, educate and empower young people to prevent and end abusive relationships.  A safe and inclusive space for youth to access information and get help, love is respect provides accessible help through free and confidential live chatting, text messaging, and calling. Love is respect also provides guidance and information through blogs, quizzes, webinars and videos. The website content is offered in English and Spanish.

One Love

One Love offer healthy relationship resources and support on topics such as boundaries, signs of an unhealthy relationship, and break-up and safety planning. You can also become a One Love student leader! One love offers training, tools and materials on healthy relationships, 1:1 coaching and support for student leaders, connection to a community of students, volunteer service hours, and skill building opportunities.

Ontario – Human Trafficking

Learn about human trafficking, including how it can happen, who is at risk and warning signs.

Right to Be

Offers free virtual bystander intervention trainings on topics such as stopping Islamophobic and Xenophobic Harassment, standing up against street and sexual harassment, and conflict and de-escalation training.

SACE

Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton offers resources related to consent, bystander intervention, and responding to sexual violence.

Teens for Courage

Offers information and resources about healthy relationships, teen dating violence, and bystander intervention. Teens for Courage believes that teens are an important part of ending dating violence, and has created ways for teens to become allies and organizers through their courage club program offering resources and supports for student leaders.

That’s Not Cool

That’s Not Cool is a national public education initiative that partners with young people to raise awareness about teen dating violence. Information and resources are delivered through different interactive elements, including a phone app, videos, and cards. Their vision is for everyone to experience healthy relationships, by bringing educational and organizing tools to communities to address dating violence, unhealthy relationships, and digital abuse.

Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking

Supports survivors / victims & educates community members on impacts of Human Trafficking in the Thunder Bay area.

Umbrella Medical Clinic

Umbrella Medical Clinic provides sexual health services for all ages, genders and orientations.

Webbing with Wisdom

Femme- identifying youth learn about and deal with online sexual violence. Webbing with wisdom offers resources peer and social worker support and resources on issues such as sexploitation, online dating, slut shaming and victim blaming.

White Ribbon

White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.
